Designing Company Name and Logos

These were our first ideas for creating our company names. They were originally based around our team name, team Vader, then expanded onto other ideas.

Our choice of company name was Force-full TV. This was chosen because the name connotes to our original team name, team Vader, being based around the Star Wars franchise. The name also relates to the force being something that binds and holds relationships and people together. So calling the company name Force-full implies that the companies aim is to create and hold a positive relation with the customer.

We did not choose our other ideas such as WorksDreams or Pony since they were such blatant rip-offs of other well known film industries such as DreamWorks or Sony. If these ideas were chosen, potential customers would view our business as a joke and would easily lose interest.

Logo Ideas:

1st idea:

Process:

This logo was created by first saving these two images into a folder.

After saving these images, a new .psd file was created with a width of 12cm and a length of 12cm and a resolution of 300 pixels/cm with a black background. The first image of the hand was first pasted onto the document and the white background of the image was cut out, only leaving the hand. There were left over white pixels next to the hand which were then manually removed. The second image was then pasted in above the hand. Both of the pasted images then had their levels adjusted, giving the hand a warmer look and the singularity a  more saturated look. Finally, a logo was taken from dafont.com which was used to create 'Force-Full TV'. This was then pasted in with a white colour at the top of the logo.

Evaluation:

This is my first idea for creating a logo for our company. I think this is an appealing image to be logo since it immediately draws the viewers attention to the image then gradually analyse the rest of the image to read the company name. Furthermore, the image of the hand almost holding the singularity is easily remembered by the viewer and symbolises the 'force' as known from the Star Wars franchise. This could be viewed as something as visually pleasing. Alternatively, this could be viewed as a drawback since the company name is not in plane sight, having the viewer analyse longer than they would have liked to.

2nd idea:

I think that this logo idea would be suitable for the company name since 'the force' comes from the star wars franchise. I also think that Darth Vaders helmet would be appropriate since it is also from the star wars franchise

Preliminary Task Video and Evaluation

This is our final product of our preliminary video task. This was produced by using a regular handheld camera with a tripod and a H1N1 sound recorder. This was edited afterwards using adobe premiere CC 2014. The director of our product was Kundai, our Storyboard creator was Ollie, our miss en scene organiser was Annabel and our editor and location scout was I, Nabil. We did have difficulty finishing the product since I have been away one day due to being unwell. This caused issues since nobody else stepped up to take the role of editing for the day.

I think that this was relatively well produced in terms of camera cuts and acting. The camera cuts from panning to tracking shots were easy to follow and the acting also made it easy for the viewer to understand the general media message delivered. Video editing was also included to give a colder look to the camera shot such as the interrogation room. For example, a white colour balance effect was included to bring out the cold colours of the room.

We were required to write a script each within our groups which therefore required us to pick the best one from our group. This is something we could have done better our group had an inability to pick with most of us sitting on the fence and saying they don't mind. When it comes round to doing the final task a snap decision as to what idea we are following is a must, to give us more time  to complete the task.

After addressing the script that formulate our task, we had to assign roles. This was a simple process and in many ways the speed at which we chose roles made up for the time wasted on the choice of script, with roles being based upon previous skill or talent. However, with the script taking an age to write the storyboard could not be finished slowing down the whole process. Despite the slow nature of the production the script was written to a good standard so drawing up the story board was not too hard and because of the this you could follow the script and story board simultaneously. Again if we were to redo the process speed would be the key aspect to improve, on whole this would make us more time effective allowing us to have more time for filming.

With the script and story board being easy to follow, the filming process was relatively easy because we knew what shots we wanted how long they were going to be and where they were going to be taken from. However, with the corridor being quite narrow we had to compromise with some of the shots e.g. the shot of the feet was mean to be a tracking shot but we could not fit all of us down the corridor. As much as these compromises were not planned, I feel we dealt with them in a professional manner and resolved the issue very quickly. One problem when looking back on the footage during the editing process is that a lot of our shots were out of focus. This was no help to the time taken in the stages before as t meant we did not have the time for filming that we would have liked but for future reference the reviewing of footage is essential for an effective overall task and we would incorporate this in next time.

Editing- When it came to editing, I was ill on the first day, this created confusion within the group. This confusion could have been resolved through communication which I as the editor have failed to do. Therefore the setback from missing the lesson was due to my absence and lack of communication with others.

Main Task Ideas

Heist Bank - Nabil

An unexpected combination of people plan a bank heist in their local pub. Ash is a woman that has a regular body build with sharp facial features. "One bullet" Bobby has an over fat body build and is generally seen with a beer in his hand with a cigarette. Clive is Chinese and has a very short body build affected by dwarfism and carries a banana is his pocket with a hammer tied on his belt. The pub is a generally hostile setting with the people inside giving glares and uncomfortable look. The plot is that all 3 men are in debt to a leading drug and arms dealer since they have also stolen from him. However the drug dealer let them off instead of murdering them and instead demanded them to rob a bank if they can rob from a drug and arms dealer.

The characters converse once they have settled down onto the grubby laminate wooden table. Ash brings a brief case with blueprints of the bank and entry points. When opened, Clive leans over and so does Bobby. Bobby's chair breaks due to his weight and the people around look in laughter. There is 1 person in particular that was made obvious due to his historical laughter. In Bobby's poor temper, he charges at the person hysterically laughing and bounces him off his stomach through the pubs window. The rest of the pub cheerer on and then resume to their own business.

During the bank heist, Ash, Bobby and Clive are generally caught in difficult situations such as all 3 are stuck on a rope that is attached onto the ceiling. So the trio are generally caught in unfortunate events causing tension while maintaining the comedy like style of the film.

Evaluation of plot:

I have chosen this particular idea since it has originality in its own regard since it has a range of people involved in organised crime. It also has a sense of humour due to this combination of people since the viewers wouldn't expect a female demolitions expert, a dwarf Chinese man with a banana and hammer with an overweight Englishman drinking beers and smoking cigarettes all take part together in a bank heist.  However, judging from the events from the opening sequence, it is not realistic since it would be difficult to cast a dwarf Chinese man and a large Englishman. Furthermore, it uses unsafe methods of acting, being the character bounced through the pub window.
In comparison to classmates idea 'Young boys', 'Heist Bank' is very unrealistic. So it is more likely that 'Young Boys' would be chosen to continue with the video task.

Young Boys - Ollie
Young goon Louis is heir to the Crime Kingdom, he is invited unexpectedly to the Crimelords mansion in good faith. when he arrives the boss is busy dealing with his wife and she storms out of the room.

The boss at this point already frustrated with his wife, gives Louis a job which he unwillingly accepts. To kill the child of the detective who is shutting down his operation.

The boss then instructs his right hand man to keep an eye on Louis as he is the heir to him and to make sure he carries out this task to show he has the metal to be a kingpin.  it cuts to a dark hospital room with Louis pointing a gun at the sleeping mother and her child. Your hear the gun the silenced gun shot and a spar of feathers as he has shot the pillow instead of the child.

HOSTAGE - Kundai

A high profile celebrity is being held hostage and is tied up whilst the terrorist talks on the phone to the negotiator whilst making threats to the hostage in order to convince the negotiator to increase his offer from £250,000 to £500,000. The negotiators reluctance to increase the price causes the terrorist to become paranoid and belligerent
The setting will preferably be a small room with dim lighting. props such as rope and a weapon would also be appropriate.

The developing shot will show the hostage tied up whilst the terrorist paces up and down whilst furiously conversing over the phone with the negotiator. The camera shots will switch between the hostage situation and the negotiator and his team discussing what to do and debating whether or not to ambush the robber
The role of the terrorist will have to be played with a lot of emotion and anger in order to create the suspense the movie is intended to have and they also will have to constantly pose the threat of executing the hostage.

There will also be a back and forth conversation between the hostage and the terrorist which consists of the hostage pleading for his life.
The terrorist will then receive a call from his getaway driver prompting him to come as the police look as if they're going to ambush him and and so the terrorist uses the hostage as a human shield

Chase - Annabel

Victim is robbed in the alley way by the mugger . The mugger then runs of with his phone, watch and wallet out of the alley way and along the street. The victim looks around and decides to chase after for his belongings.

Running in parks, town centres, roads and pavements the victim eventually catches up with the mugger as he reaches a top floor of the carpark. The victim then approaches the mugger and grabs him by the throat, shouting.

There's then a struggle, resulting in the mugger falling over the edge of the carpark. The victim takes a look over the edge and is shocked it to see the body slumped on the ground below. In a panic the victim runs off.

Preliminary Task Storyboard

Making a Film Opening

Enigma - a person or thing that is mysterious or difficult to understand.

What makes a good film opening?

The main-title sequence or the opening credits of a movie can be considered the most important piece in a film. Other than trailers and marketing elements, they are the first images the audience sees when the lights go down. These quick clips (all about two to three minutes) outline the filmmaker's intentions and set up the expectations of those watching.

Saul Bass, a graphic artist in the film industry said, "making a main-title was like making a poster, you're condensing the event into this one concept, this one metaphor·a back-story that needs to be told or a character that needs to be introduced."

Factors to consider:

What EDITING techniques have been used? Pace, rhythm, cuts & transitions etc.
What is the CINEMATOGRAPHY like? Shot sizes, movements, angles & height.
What is the MISE-EN-SCENE like? Props, locations, lighting, costume & performance
What is the SOUND like? Music (& tone) dialogue, sound effects & ambience.
What are the TITLES & GRAPHICS like? Font, typefaces, colour, layout and movement. Look at
the NARRATIVE. What are you being and not being told? Enigmas.
Introduction to CHARACTERS. What do you find out about them? Like/dislike them?
Analyse the PRODUCTION VALUES. Does it look high end or low budget.
Clues to the GENRE of the film. Styles & codes.
Does the opening GRIP YOU and hold your attention? If so how does it do this?
Does the intro REFLECT & sell the films content  & themes & ADD something to & set up the film?

Preliminary video task

Discussion/ interview task:

Nabil:

Future aims of training

R: Hi Nabil, how are you doing today?

N: Im doing good man, yourself?

R: I’m doing good thanks, so how long have you been training at the gym for?

N: Ive been training for a good 2 years by now

R: Lots of hard work?

N: Yeah definitely(chuckles)

R: How many days per week are youn in the gym for?

N: 6 out of 7 days a week. But every 7th week I take a weeks recovery then start training again.

R: Sounds like a good plan. So what kind of diet are you on currently? Are you also taking supplements?

N: Right now im on a bulking phase so im usually eating half a plates worth of
proteins, quarter plates worth of fats and a quarter of carbs. Im also taking
BCAAs and creatine monohydrate.

R: And what are your final aims of your bodybuilding career?

N: My final aims are to place into mr olympias mens physique competition, it
would be a dream come true.

R: Well I wish you luck and hope you make that dream come true. Thanks for the interview!

N: You’re very welcome!

Evaluation of preliminary task idea:

I think this is a good idea with little drawback since it is fairly easy and realistic to produce. It is easy since it would only include video rules such as the 180 degree rule and would be easy to edit overall. There are drawbacks such as a lack of originality for a preliminary task.

Kundai:

plot:
a notorious terrorist has been captured by MI5 and is being interrogated and eventually reveals the information, however little does the interrogator know that his colleague is actually an undercover terrorist and aids the terrorist in his escape

Interrogator: Well, Mr._______, you have currently been charged with treason, attempted mass murder and possession of weapons of mass destruction. What do you have to say for yourself?

Terrorist:
silence

Interrogator:
Mr.______ I would advise you that if you do not comply with us then we will be left with no choice but to charge you with the three crimes which would result in a public execution

Terrorist:
Silence

Interrogator:
chuckles
Quiet one aren’t ya’
However, if you were to comply then I could perhaps make you an offer maybe less extreme? Than being decapitated

Terrorist:
What do you want?

Interrogator:
We want to know who you work for

Terrorist:
I work for your mum
laughs

Interrogator:
Smacks terrorist across the face
(angrily)
Now listen here if you don’t tell me what I need to know right this instance then...

*Enter Interrogator 2*
*Grabs interrogator 1*
Relax! Relax! We can't interrogate him if he's dead

Location analysis

photo 1
photo 2
photo 3
photo 4

These photos represent the proposed location of our video recording for my preliminary media task. These locations would be suitable for our dialogue and mark scheme. It would be suitable since photo 1 is our interrogation room where our main dialogue would take place. It would also be suitable for our mark scheme since it can include a door opening and a range of camera shots and angles.

Video Auxiliary Equipment

Track and Dolly

The track and Dolly camera setup is essentially a camera is generally used to take smooth, horizontal video shots, mainly tracking shots. I work in a way that the camera is set up onto a moving board (Dolly) and is manually pushed back and fourth by a person. An advantage of this would be that it is human controlled rather than machine controlled which could possibly be faulty. The disadvantage of this technique could be that is does not have a vast range of movement, rather than a handheld camera.

Stedi-cam

The steady cam is a large camera stabiliser used to capture steady camera shots. It allows a steady camera shot even over uneven surfaces when used. The main advantage of a steadicam would be its ability to take steady camera shots over a regular handheld camera. The possible disadvantage could be that it is a heavy device and could cause discomfort for the user.

Tripod

A tripod is used to elevate and stabilise a camera while filming a section. It works in an automated fashion that the user only controls the angle of camera shot. The advantage of a tripod would be that it steadies the camera and is easy. The possible disadvantage could be that it cannot move. It is only in one stationary placement so it limits the user.

H1N

The H1N recorder is used to record audio at very high levels of quality. It works simply with one butting with the function of start and stop recording. You are also able to adjust the sensitivity of sound being recorded when being used. The advantage of this over a handheld camera is that it has a greater sound quality recoding. The clear disadvantage is that it cannot record video.

Diagetic sound - Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film: voices of characters. sounds made by objects in the story. music represented as coming from instruments in the story space.

Non-Diagetic sound - Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action: narrator's commentary, sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect, mood music.

Editing

Video editing cuts:
  • cutting on action
  • cut away
  • cross cut
  • jump cut
  • match cut
  • fade in
  • fade out
  • dissolve
  • smash cut
  • iris
  • wipe
  • invisible cut
  • l-cut
  • j-cut

Editing - prepare material for publication by correcting, condensing, or otherwise modifying it.

Continuity - make sure things are continuous

Continuity Editing - make scenes look continuous

180 degree rule - Is to orientate the viewer, to establish the placement of characters.

Match on action - show continuous action

Shot reverse shot - when it goes from shot a to b to a to b

eye-line match - Is a following shot that follows what character is looking at, makes cuts smoother the audience expects the cut to happen and is eager to see what happens next/what character sees.

cross cutting - Technique of continuously alternating 2 or more scenes that often happen simultaneously (at same time) but in different locations.

insert shot - In film, an insert is a shot of part of a scene as filmed from a different angle and/or focal length from the master shot (original/establishing shot). Inserts cover action already covered in the master shot, but emphasize a different aspect of that action due to the different framing.

cut away - A cutaway is video scene that CUTS away to relevant images or footage

Editing techniques used in the matrix

The editing techniques used in this sequence of the film are cutting on action (0:04), match on action (0:05), CGI transitioning into a cut away (0:33)

Continuity errors

Continuity errors can be errors such as angles, lighting, costumes, props.

The errors from this sequence includes the changing position of the wine and bread from 0:30 to 0:35, the TV that was turned on at 0:37, the second bottle of wine at 0:40, the third bottle of wine and different shirt at 0:45, changed from orange juice at 0:36, no bottles of wine and changed meals at 0:56.

Examples on matching on action:

An example of matching on action would be this sequence of the matrix, transitioning from the first combat to the next shot towards the pillar.

Eye line matching would be a shot of the actors point of view such as an actor looking off screen then transitioning into a wide shot of the scenery.

Magazine Lay-out Design

Characteristics of a good magazine lay-out design

1)  Bold Font
2)  Enlarged, centred main image relevant to the theme
3) Appealing colours to the main audience
4) Mast head - biggest text of the front cover
5) Headings (Main Cover/Cover Line)
6) Puff
7) Page references with articles
8) Tag Line
9) Hierarchy
10) Publisher
11) Buzz Word
12) Sky Line
13) Serif (Complex/Handwritten) and Sans Serif (Simple) font

What is a Font?

A font is a set of printable or displayable text characters in a specific style and size.

What is the difference between serif and sans serif fonts?

A Serif font has small, decorative flourishes at the end of each character stroke while  a Sans Serif font does not have such flourishes at the end stroke of each character.

Why do magazines use a vary of fonts and colours?

A vary of fonts and colours are used in a magazine to appeal to the target audience such as a sans serif font with a bold red colour as a mast head would appeal to the male audience while a serif font with a light pink colour as a mast head would appeal to the female audience.

What is a complimentary colour?

A complimentary colour are colours that are opposite colours that are on the colour circle. These opposite colours also harmonise with each other, giving an appealing look to the target audience.

What is an Analagous colour?

Analogous colors are groups of three colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, with one being the dominant color, which tends to be a primary or secondary color, and a tertiary.

What is a Masthead?

A masthead is the title of a newspaper or magazine at the head of the first or editorial page.

What is a cover line?

Cover lines are short statements found on the cover of the magazine that allude to or describe the articles inside.

What is a 'main cover line'?

The centre cover line which aims to appeal to the target audience such as relevant content of the main article such as the line 'Star Wars' in the front cover.

What is the 'Left third' and the 'Right 2/3rd'?

The left and right third is the content that shows the magazines main article and information which shows the audience what content is inside without even picking the magazine up.

Why are barcodes and dates uses?

Barcodes and dates are used so that the customer knows the issue number and for what price the magazine can be purchased.
